Czech-born Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) is a representative painter of the Art Nouveau movement that took hold in Europe at the end of the 19th century. He moved to Paris in 1888. He became a star of his time when he worked on the poster for the play Gismonda, starring the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, and demonstrated his diverse talents as a graphic designer, illustrator, and painter. In addition to posters and decorative panels from his time in Paris, this exhibition will also feature design books, magazines, postcards, product packaging, and materials related to his masterpiece The Slavic Epic, which was created after he returned to his hometown of the Czech Republic. This exhibition will fully showcase the appeal of Mucha's work through approximately 500 items, including works that will be on display in Shikoku for the first time. In addition, as a special exhibition in Ehime, there will be a chapter introducing Ehime-born designer Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965), who was devoted to Mucha and greatly influenced him. There will also be a large number of exciting goods available to enjoy the afterglow of the exhibition.
