PHOTOGRAPHY: The past and future of photography

The exhibition will trace the history of photography by showcasing a collection of about 120 photographs donated in fiscal year 2023 by Ehime businessman Koichiro Yamakawa. In addition, we hope that by introducing works by photographers with ties to the prefecture, the exhibition will provide an opportunity to look at the history and future of photography in the prefecture.

The word "PHOTOGRAPHY" has its origin in Greek and means "painting with light."
The origin of photography is said to be the phenomenon of the outside world being projected through light entering a small window onto the wall of a dark room. The successful fixation of this image, rather than simply projecting it, marked the beginning of the history of photography. Since its birth in the 1820s, photography has continued to evolve in terms of technology for about 200 years, and we humans have been exploring what and how to express and communicate using these techniques.
This time, we will introduce a collection of about 120 photographs donated by Ehime Prefecture businessman Koichiro Yamakawa in fiscal year 2023. This collection includes many works that are essential to the history of photography, such as those by Eugène Atget, the pioneer of modern photography, Edward Weston, who pursued realistic expression, and domestic artists such as Ikko Narahara and Nobuyoshi Araki, and through these works, we will trace the progress of photographic art.
Another notable feature of this collection is that it includes works by artists with ties to the prefecture, such as Shirakawa Yoshikazu, who is from the same hometown as Yamakawa in Shikokuchuo City and had direct contact with him, Shiraoka Jun, who is from Niihama City, and Kagawa Hisashi, who lives in Matsuyama City. This exhibition is an extension of the Yamakawa collection, and will also introduce works by photographers with ties to the prefecture who have continued to create works using the artistic expression of photography up to the present day. We hope that this will provide an opportunity to look at the history and future of photographic art in the prefecture.
