Maurits Cornelius Escher (1898-1972) is one of the leading printmakers of the 20th century, and is popular worldwide for his fascinating works, mainly so-called "trompe l'oeil" works. Born in the Netherlands, Escher studied printmaking at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. In his early years, he was fascinated by the cityscapes and architecture of Italy and Spain, and used them as subject matter in his work. From 1925 to 1938, he was based in Rome. The mosaic patterns of the Alhambra Palace in Spain had a major influence on Escher's unique style. In 1938, he released one of his masterpieces, Day and Night. After that, he released a series of masterpieces on themes such as "plane filling," which covers the screen with repeating patterns, and the intersection of two and three dimensions. This exhibition will be the first in Japan to display about 150 selected works from his early to late works, which are owned by the Israel Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of Escher's works. Please enjoy this exhibition of Escher's highly original works, in which he analyzed the extraordinary phenomena that our human eyes reveal, and continued to create new and mysterious worlds with his insatiable spirit of inquiry.
