In 19th century France, the Industrial Revolution led to the modernization of cities. With the development of natural science, a positivist spirit spread, and trends such as naturalism and realism emerged. Millet of the Barbizon School devoted his life to peasant subjects. Then, Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir emerged, pursuing light and color, bringing innovation to painting. After the Impressionist style became widespread in the 1880s, painting showed a diverse range of developments during the Post-Impressionist period. This exhibition surveys the flow of 19th century French painting from the Barbizon School, through Impressionism, to the Nabis, through approximately 70 masterpieces, including seven paintings by Millet and Monet's Water Lilies, exhibited by museums and private collections in France and the UK.
