Born in Imabari in the late Edo period, Oki Kan'gaku (1817-1876) was a painter who trained in Kyoto and was active in Edo. He painted everything from people to flowers and birds to landscapes, and excelled in both ink painting and coloring. He was beloved by ordinary people in the downtown area as the creator of the largest votive plaque at Sensoji Temple.
This exhibition, which will be held at the end of 2017 to mark the 200th anniversary of Kan'gaku's birth, will feature a variety of Kan'gaku's works and historical materials, as well as works by his teachers and friends and other Iyo painters. We hope that this will be an opportunity to rediscover the achievements of Iyo people in the Edo art world at that time.
