This retrospective explores the career of Shinro Ohtake, who was born and raised in Tokyo during the period of rapid economic growth and has been based in Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture since 1988, through seven themes: "Self/Other," "Memory," "Time," "Transition," "Dream/Retina," "Layer," and "Sound." Shinro Ohtake (1955- ) is highly regarded abroad as one of Japan's leading contemporary artists, having been active in a wide variety of fields and participating in two major international exhibitions, Documenta (2012) and the Venice Biennale (2013). Focusing on all sorts of "things" that tend to be consumed and forgotten, he has been creating highly original works for nearly half a century. Among his vast body of work are many works that are connected to Uwajima, including "New Chanel" and "Uwajima Station." This time, we will be introducing approximately 500 carefully selected works, including his life's work of over 70 scrapbooks and monumental large-scale three-dimensional works, in a way that is deliberately removed from chronological order and reconstructed to allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the works. We hope that through the works, visitors will be able to relive the scenes that Ohtake Shinro has been observing for half his life. This exhibition, held at the Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, will be the first to be held locally, and will also feature a special exhibition in collaboration with Uwajima City and Dogo Onsen Honkan (Matsuyama City).
