This year marks 110 years since 1912, the last year of the Meiji era. This exhibition will introduce how painters captured the Japanese landscape of this era, when Japan as a whole was undergoing major transformation due to its relationship with Western countries and its own consciousness was also turning outward, through over 200 watercolors and oil paintings collected by a collector overseas. These include 13 works by Nakagawa Hachiro (1877-1922), a Western-style painter from Uchiko Town, including his early masterpiece, Snow Forest Return Home. To mark the 100th anniversary of his death, we will be exhibiting Nakagawa's works in our collection exhibition in conjunction with this exhibition, and once again conveying their appeal. In the midst of the irresistible swell of the times, the landscapes that painters discovered were not new, but were part of everyday life that was there. Perhaps some of these overlap with our current situation, where we are reexamining our past lives amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope you will enjoy the Meiji Japan landscapes as if you were traveling.
