When you hear the phrase "beautiful person," what kind of figure comes to mind? This clear-sounding yet elusive figure has been pursued by many painters from around the world, past and present. In Japan, "bijinga," a unique genre of painting that follows on from the ancient depictions of women, was established after the Meiji period. This exhibition will display approximately 80 masterpieces by a diverse range of painters, including Uemura Shōen, Kaburagi Kiyokata, and Ito Shinsui, who were hailed as masters, Kitano Tsunetomi and Shima Seien, who were active in Osaka, Okamoto Shinsō, who represents the Taisho decadence, and Kontani Mitsutoshi, who was based in the Hokuriku region, from a collection of bijinga from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods that was formed through the aesthetic eye of one collector, and convey the richness of "bijinga." In addition, we will also introduce the works of Kawasaki Rankō (1882-1918), a skilled painter from Yawatahama who was active in the same era as Shōen but died young, and will approach the universal question of "what is beauty?"
