Miwada Beizan (1821-1908) was born as the eldest son of the Hio Hachiman Shrine in Matsuyama, Iyo, and spent his entire life as a priest there. In addition to his work as a priest, he studied all aspects of Japanese and Chinese studies, wrote calligraphy, composed poetry, and loved alcohol. In calligraphy, he established his own style by taking Wang Xizhi as his ideal, and his calligraphy by Suiyo in particular was highly praised throughout Iyo during his lifetime. His calligraphy, which was free and unrestrained by anything, still shines uniquely even today as a "pioneer of modern calligraphy." This exhibition marks the 200th anniversary of Yoneyama's birth and brings together all of his unique works, which overwhelm and amaze viewers. The collection of Osaka businessman Hatsujiro Yamamoto (1887-1951), which solidified Yoneyama's reputation today, will be returning to Matsuyama for the first time in 31 years (now held at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka). We hope that this will be an opportunity for visitors to experience the endless charm of Yoneyama art through a number of representative works from within and outside the prefecture, rubbings of Shinmeiseki and Shimeishi stones, banners, and more.
