Kawabata Yasunari (1899-1972), the first Japanese author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, is also known as an accomplished art collector. His collection is wide-ranging, from ancient art, such as Urakami Gyokudō's Frozen Clouds and Sifted Snow, and Ike Taiga and Yosa Buson's Ten Convenient and Ten Good Ideas, to modern and contemporary art by Koga Harue and Kusama Yayoi, and even Western art, all of which are designated national treasures.
Kawabata also had a close relationship with Higashiyama Kaii (1908-1999), one of Japan's leading postwar painters, and many of Higashiyama's works are included in the Kawabata Collection. Like Kawabata, Higashiyama also collected a wide variety of art.
This exhibition introduces the art collected by Kawabata and Higashiyama, exploring their aesthetic sense, and also displays a number of Higashiyama's works together, tracing the trajectory of the exchange between the two masters and approaching the world of beauty they pursued. Also on display will be an unposted letter recently discovered at Kawabata's residence addressed to Kawabata's first love, Ito Hatsuyo, who was the model for his masterpiece "The Dancing Girl of Izu," as well as calligraphy by such literary greats as Natsume Soseki, Dazai Osamu, and Mishima Yukio.
*Some exhibits will be changed during the exhibition.
