Born in Futanamura, Kitauwa District, Ehime Prefecture (now Mima-cho, Uwajima City), Azechi Umetaro (1902-1999) has come to be known as a "mountain printmaker" for his depictions of mountains from various angles, including mountain scenery, mountain creatures, and his signature work Mountain Man. This exhibition, his first retrospective in 10 years at the Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art, will display over 200 prints from his early period to his final years. It will also introduce his work in the mountain literary magazine Alp, as well as his "book work," which allows visitors to experience Azechi's rich thoughts as reflected in his book covers and bookplates. As he described his life as "plodding," Azechi's feet were firmly on the ground as he built up his artistic career without rushing, and the exhibition will once again convey the appeal of the man and his work from his birthplace.
