Kumagai Morikazu (1880-1977), a painter who lived from the Meiji to Showa periods, closely observed his subjects and vividly depicted the lives of those close to him. His unique style of painting, which he developed in his later years, using bright colors and simplified forms, continues to attract many people even today.
This exhibition marks the first major retrospective in Shikoku in a long time, looking back on Kumagai's artistic career, which marked the 40th anniversary of his death last year, with over 190 works, including oil paintings, ink paintings, and calligraphy. Sketches and diaries are also on display, providing a glimpse into the background of the creation of his generous yet unique works. We hope that visitors will be able to experience the richness of the world that Kumagai captured with his eyes and hands.
*Some exhibits will be changed during the exhibition period.
