Born in 1932 in Besshiyama Village, Uma District, Ehime Prefecture (now Niihama City), Manabe Hiroshi produced a wide variety of works in the world of illustration. This large-scale retrospective is being held in the 20th anniversary year of his death. Approximately 700 pieces of work will be on display, ranging from oil paintings that Manabe created while he was a university student to original drawings for book covers by Shinichi Hoshi and Yasutaka Tsutsui. In the town of his birth, Manabe looks back on his artistic career, which pioneered new designs in response to Japan's high economic growth, such as the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1970 Osaka Expo.
